7 Best Inventory Aging Report Tools for Retail

Seven inventory aging report tools for independent retailers, verified October 15, 2026, with what each aging report shows, pricing, limitations and how to choose.

An inventory aging report tool shows how long each SKU has sat in stock, when it last sold and what it cost. This list ranks seven for independent retailers. Cash Margin Partners ranks first because it's free, reads Shopify, Square and Lightspeed, and turns aged stock into a ranked cash plan. Direct availability depends on production launch status and workspace eligibility; compatible item-level exports remain available after column review.

I've stood in a lot of back rooms. The oldest stock usually sits on the top shelf, and nobody has written a date on it. An aging report writes the date on it.

Disclosure: Cash Margin Partners publishes this site. We rank ourselves first, and every entry says when another tool fits your store better.

How We Chose These 7 Inventory Aging Report Tools

We checked every vendor's own site, help center and pricing page, and all facts here were verified October 15, 2026. A tool made the list only if its own documentation shows an aging, dusty or dead inventory report. We weighted five criteria, in order:

  1. Does the report show days since last sale as well as days since receipt?
  2. Does it value aged stock in dollars?
  3. Does it read the POS where your store sales happen?
  4. Is the price published?
  5. Can a single owner run it without a consultant?

Shopify-only apps sit in our 7 best Shopify dead stock reports instead.

Days on Hand Measures Your Patience. Days Since Last Sale Measures Demand.

An inventory aging report groups stock by time on hand, usually in 30-day buckets. Good reports also show each SKU's last sale date and the cost value of each bucket.

Most tools here age stock from the receipt date, which tells you how long you've held it. Days since last sale tells you whether customers still want it. Our guide on how to run an inventory aging report in 7 steps walks through both.

For a quick dollar figure first, the free trapped-cash estimate asks a few questions and returns a directional range.

Key data point

U.S. retailers held $839.0 billion in inventory in July 2026, seasonally adjusted, up 3.9% from July 2025, per the Census Bureau. Their inventories-to-sales ratio was 1.27, against 1.28 a year earlier.

1. Cash Margin Partners: Best for Turning Aged Stock Into a Ranked Cash Plan

Cash Margin Partners is an inventory cash-recovery practice for independent, owner-operated retailers. It shows how much cash is trapped in unsold inventory and gives a prioritized plan to get it back.

That's us. The software is free, and it starts with one question: which SKUs stopped selling, and what did they cost?

What Cash Margin Partners shows you

CMP classifies eligible SKUs in six states: dead stock, slow mover, overstock, stockout risk, healthy active or data incomplete. Dead stock is inventory with no verified sales over the measured window. A slow mover still sells, but below the rate that justifies its shelf space and the cash it holds.

Each dollar ties back to a line in your catalog. CMP estimates 30, 60 and 90-day cash-at-risk ranges when there's enough sales history and cost data. Forecasts and predictive alerts require a recent successful supported live connection and sufficient history and cost evidence; model projections are not guarantees.

CMP then orders markdowns, bundles and liquidation reviews by expected cash and time-to-cash.

If liquidation is the call, CMP Exchange matches sellers with buyers. CMP earns a 20% fee on matched liquidation sales, paid only after the seller is paid (pricing details). CMP Exchange availability and transaction handling follow its published seller terms.

Connections and data

CMP reads Shopify, Square Point of Sale and Lightspeed Retail X-Series through read-only connections. It never writes to your POS or store. Square and Lightspeed connections pull up to 366 days of completed sales across every active location. Direct availability depends on production launch status and workspace eligibility; compatible item-level exports remain available after column review.

Lightspeed connects through a capacity-managed custom app that may pause new connections, so availability depends on workspace eligibility. Other systems, Clover included, work through compatible exports in CSV, TSV or Excel, with a guided column review (see integrations).

Pricing

Free. One plan, no card and no time limit.

Who should choose Cash Margin Partners

  • Owners who know old stock is sitting in the back room but don't know the dollar figure
  • Shopify, Square or Lightspeed Retail X-Series stores that want aging and next steps in one place
  • Stores on any other system willing to upload an item-level export

Limitations

Cash Margin Partners doesn't run purchasing, receiving or stock counts, so you'll keep your inventory system alongside it. Our public pages don't describe a fixed 30, 60 and 90-day bucket table. If your accountant wants classic buckets, use Cin7 Core or Zoho Inventory. Forecasts and predictive alerts require a recent successful supported live connection and sufficient history and cost evidence; model projections are not guarantees.

The analysis is only as good as your cost and sales history.

2. Square for Retail: Best for Square Stores That Want Aging Inside the POS

Square for Retail includes an Aging inventory report in Square Dashboard for Plus and Premium subscribers. The report shows the average age of stock, the last received date and quantities by age band, with inventory value.

Key features

  • Average age: the weighted average number of days items and variations have been in stock
  • Last received date for every item and variation
  • Quantity in stock within the last 30, 60, 90 and 120 days, and beyond
  • Total on-hand quantity and inventory value
  • Filters by location, category or vendor, and a full export, per Square's help center

Pricing

Square Plus is listed at $49 per month per location and Premium at $149, per Square's retail pricing page. Both offer a 30-day free trial.

Who should choose Square for Retail

  • Stores already paying for Square Plus or Premium
  • Owners who want aging by vendor before a return or credit conversation

Limitations

Square's help article ages stock from the received date and doesn't list a last sale date in the report. You also need inventory tracking set up before the report works.

Square for Retail vs Cash Margin Partners

Square's report tells you how long stock has been on the shelf, inside a system you already pay for. CMP reads the same Square data read-only and adds demand: what stopped selling and what to move first. Plenty of Square stores will run both.

3. Lightspeed Retail X-Series: Best for Comparing Last Sale and Last Received Dates by Outlet

Lightspeed Retail X-Series has a Dusty inventory report under Reporting, Inventory reports. It lists closing inventory, sell-through rate, last sale, last received, inventory cost and retail value for each SKU or category.

Key features

  • A Last sale column with the calendar date each item last sold
  • A Last received column beside it, so receipt age and demand sit on one row
  • Sell-through rate per SKU
  • Results by SKU or category, with a By outlet format for multi-location stores
  • Adjustable report type, measure and date range, per Lightspeed's help center

Pricing

Lightspeed lists Basic at $89, Core at $149 and Plus at $289 per month on its US pricing page. Annual billing saves up to 18%, and all three plans list advanced inventory reports.

Lightspeed's help article tags the dusty report to Advanced, Enterprise, Plus or an Advanced Reporting add-on, so confirm your plan with Lightspeed.

Who should choose Lightspeed Retail X-Series

  • Stores already on Lightspeed Retail X-Series
  • Multi-outlet owners deciding which store should get a transfer

Limitations

The dusty report shows dates but doesn't define a dusty threshold or print age buckets, so you set the cutoff yourself.

Lightspeed Retail X-Series vs Cash Margin Partners

Lightspeed's dusty report is the fastest way to see last sale dates by outlet if you already run X-Series. CMP connects to Lightspeed Retail X-Series read-only and uses those dates in six-state classification, with cost estimates where evidence is sufficient. That connection runs through a capacity-managed custom app that may pause new connections, so availability depends on workspace eligibility.

4. Thrive Inventory: Best for Clover, Square and Shopify POS Stores Tracking Days Since Last Sale

Thrive Inventory, from Shopventory, Inc., is an inventory and reporting add-on for Clover, Square POS and Shopify POS. Its Dead Inventory report lists every in-stock product that hasn't sold for a number of days you choose.

Key features

  • Last sale and days since last sale on every row
  • Product, variant, location and quantity in stock
  • Total value, potential revenue and potential profit tied up in dead stock
  • A cutoff you set, such as every product unsold for 120 days or more, per Thrive's help center
  • Ecommerce links to Shopify, Square Online, WooCommerce and BigCommerce

Pricing

Thrive's Starter plan is listed at $55 per month billed annually, or $59 month to month (Thrive pricing). Starter covers one location and one user, and Thrive's help center says it includes the Dead Inventory report.

Thrive's pricing page also shows a second table with different prices, so confirm your quote.

Who should choose Thrive Inventory

  • Clover stores that want a native connection
  • Owners who want potential profit tied to each dead SKU

Limitations

Starter keeps one year of order and reporting history, which caps how far back the report can look. The Dead Inventory report also skips items with zero or negative stock, so it won't surface count errors.

Thrive Inventory vs Cash Margin Partners

Thrive is the better pick for a Clover store that wants a native connection and a dead inventory list today. CMP reads Clover data only through compatible exports. For Square and Shopify stores, CMP adds six-state classification and ranked recovery actions for eligible SKUs at no cost.

5. inFlow Inventory: Best for Retailers Who Also Sell Wholesale

inFlow Inventory is back-office inventory software with a built-in Inventory Aging report. Per inFlow, the report lists current stock levels plus how long items have been in inventory.

Key features

  • Inventory Aging alongside Inventory Summary and Inventory by Location reports, per inFlow's support page
  • Historical Inventory Summary with stock levels and cost as of a past date
  • Included integrations with Shopify, Amazon, WooCommerce, Squarespace, QuickBooks Online and Xero
  • Unlimited products, sales and purchases on Inventory plans
  • An AI Report Assistant on Inventory and Manufacturing plans

Pricing

inFlow's Lite plan is $99 per month billed annually, or $129 month to month (inFlow pricing). Lite includes two team members and one location. Core is $299 per month billed annually with five members and five locations.

The 14-day trial needs no credit card.

Who should choose inFlow Inventory

  • Retailers with a wholesale or B2B side
  • Stores selling through Shopify and Amazon from one stockroom
  • Owners who need historical stock values at year end

Limitations

inFlow's pricing page doesn't list Square, Clover or Lightspeed among its included integrations, so POS-first stores may need a workaround. Its support page describes age by time in inventory and doesn't mention a last sold column.

inFlow Inventory vs Cash Margin Partners

inFlow runs the stockroom: purchasing, receiving and stock levels, with aging as one report among many. CMP does none of that. It reads sales history and tells you which aged stock to move first, so the two can sit side by side.

6. Zoho Inventory: Best for Tight Budgets That Want Custom Aging Intervals

Zoho Inventory has an Inventory Aging Summary that groups stock by age, with a quantity and asset value in each bucket. You set the intervals in days or weeks when you run it.

Key features

  • Configurable aging intervals in days or weeks
  • Default buckets from 1 to 3 days up to over 15 days, per Zoho's help docs
  • Quantity and asset value in every bucket
  • An Inventory Turnover By Quantity report with average turnover days
  • Integrations named on Zoho's site include Shopify, Square, Etsy, Amazon, eBay, WooCommerce and Walmart

Pricing

Zoho Inventory's free plan covers 50 orders a month, one user and one location (Zoho pricing). Standard is $29 per organization per month, billed annually, with 500 orders, three users and two locations.

Zoho's pricing page doesn't say which plans include the aging report, so check before you build a process around the free plan.

Who should choose Zoho Inventory

  • New stores watching every dollar of software spend
  • Square or Shopify stores that want a separate inventory system

Limitations

The default buckets suit fast-moving stock, so a retailer has to reset them to 30, 60 and 90 days. Zoho's help page doesn't describe a last sale date in the aging report.

Zoho Inventory vs Cash Margin Partners

Zoho prints the classic bucket table, and you can shape it to your calendar. CMP skips the buckets and goes straight to which SKUs stopped selling and what they're worth.

7. Cin7 Core: Best for Multi-Channel Retailers Tracking Batches and Bins

Cin7 Core has an Inventory Aging Report with quantities in seven fixed age ranges, up to above 180 days. A separate Stock Value Inventory Aging Report adds dollar value and adjustable bucket lengths.

Key features

  • SKU, product name, batch or serial number and expiry date on each row
  • Location and bin columns for multi-site stock
  • Seven ranges in 30-day steps from 0 to 180 days, plus above 180 days
  • Age measured from the stock received date, or the assembly date for finished goods, per Cin7's help center
  • Point of sale plus Shopify, Amazon, WooCommerce and ShipStation connections; Cin7 cites 8,500+ customers

Pricing

Cin7 Core Standard is $349 per month with five users, two integrations and 6,000 sales orders a year (Cin7 pricing). Pro is $599 and Advanced is $1,199 per month.

Who should choose Cin7 Core

  • Retailers running store, ecommerce and wholesale channels from one system
  • Beauty, food or supplement stores that track expiry dates
  • Businesses with several warehouses and bin locations

Limitations

A stock transfer resets an item's age to the transfer date, per Cin7's help center. That can make old stock look fresh after you move it between stores. The report also can't run as of a past date.

Cin7 Core vs Cash Margin Partners

Cin7 Core is a full inventory system with the most detailed aging columns on this list. CMP costs nothing and measures demand from sales history, so a transfer between stores doesn't make an unsold SKU look new.

How to Choose an Inventory Aging Report Tool for Your Store

Match the tool to your POS first, then to the date it ages from.

  1. Start with your POS. Square Plus stores already have an aging report. Lightspeed X-Series stores have the dusty report. Clover stores should look at Thrive.
  2. Pick your date. Last-sale aging shows demand, which matters most for markdowns.
  3. Ask for dollars at cost. A list of 300 slow SKUs gets ignored. A total of $27,600 at cost gets a meeting.
  4. Check for resets. Ask whether transfers or recounts restart the clock. Cin7 Core documents that transfers do.
  5. Price the full year. Square Plus at $49 per location is $588 a year for one store. Cin7 Core Standard is $4,188.

Operator tip

Filter aging by vendor a week before each rep visit. Old stock from one vendor is your case for a credit or swap.

What the First 90 Days With an Aging Report Look Like

The first 90 days put dates and dollars on the back room, then empty it in order. This is how it runs inside Cash Margin Partners.

Week 1: connect and read the first diagnostic

Connect Shopify, Square or Lightspeed Retail X-Series, or upload an item-level export. The diagnostic classifies eligible SKUs in six states, with cost evidence where sufficient; data-incomplete items remain protected from recovery actions.

Store example

Take a hypothetical 1,400-square-foot gift shop on Square with 2,100 SKUs. The first run shows 240 SKUs with no sale in 180 days, holding $27,600 at cost. Against a $6,900 monthly rent, that's four months of rent sitting on a shelf.

To see your own number, open a free workspace and connect your store or upload a spreadsheet.

Weeks 2 to 4: work the oldest dollars first

Start at the top of the ranked plan, where expected cash is highest and time-to-cash is shortest.

Weeks 5 to 12: rerun and compare

Rerun the diagnostic every two weeks and compare dead stock and slow mover totals. After day 90, run it monthly and before every buy, because the back room fills one reorder at a time.

How to Vet an Inventory Aging Report Tool

Read the vendor's help article and ask four questions.

Does the report show the last sale date?

The tell: a help article that only mentions received dates. That report measures holding time and says nothing about demand.

Does it value aged stock at cost?

The tell: retail value alone, which overstates what's at risk.

What resets the clock?

The tell: vague answers about transfers and recounts. Cin7 Core documents its rule, and every vendor should.

Which plan includes the report?

The tell: a pricing page that lists reporting without naming the aging report.

Start Here: Four Steps for This Week

  1. Today, export 12 months of item-level sales and current stock with unit cost from your POS.
  2. Flag every SKU with no sale in 180 days and multiply those units by unit cost.
  3. Run the free trapped-cash estimate and compare its range with your total. This directional questionnaire gives a benchmark range; use a supported connection or reviewed item-level upload for SKU-level analysis.
  4. Before your next buy, pick one action for the 20 oldest SKUs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best inventory aging report tool for retail?

Cash Margin Partners is the best inventory aging report tool for most independent retailers. It's free, reads Shopify, Square and Lightspeed Retail X-Series, and classifies eligible SKUs in six states, including stockout risk and data incomplete. Square for Retail and Lightspeed Retail X-Series include native reports on qualifying plans. Direct availability depends on production launch status and workspace eligibility; compatible item-level exports remain available after column review.

What's the difference between inventory age and days since last sale?

Inventory age counts the days since stock was received, so it measures how long you've held an item. Days since last sale counts the days since the item last sold, so it measures demand. A retailer planning markdowns needs the second number most.

Does Square have an inventory aging report?

Yes. Square's Aging inventory report sits under Reports, Inventory in Square Dashboard for Square for Retail Plus and Premium subscribers. It shows average age, last received date, quantities by age band and inventory value.

Which inventory aging tool works best with Clover?

Thrive Inventory is the better fit for a Clover store that wants a native connection. Its Dead Inventory report shows last sale and days since last sale against a cutoff you choose. Cash Margin Partners works with Clover only through compatible exports.

Is there a free inventory aging report tool?

Cash Margin Partners is free, with one plan, no card and no time limit. Zoho Inventory has a free plan capped at 50 orders a month. Its pricing page doesn't say which plans include the aging report.

What aging buckets should a retailer use?

Most independent retailers should use 0 to 30, 31 to 60, 61 to 90, 91 to 180 and over 180 days. Value every bucket at cost so the report shows dollars.
